[n]+1

[n]+1

[n]+1 is the name I have given to my graduate thesis work. To break it down, n is a number variable that represents the current population of the world. It is a variable for a few reasons. First, the exact population can not really be determined with our current technology or best guesses. Second, the number is constantly changing.

The +1 of the equation refers to you.

While it is easy to decipher that this work deals with the population, I am interested more in dealing with the problem of showing people just exactly how they fit into the context of [n]. To do this, I first need to show people what [n] looks like. As you can see from the frantic numbers below, it is a really big number.

As it stands right now, I plan to fill a very large container with the same number of grains of sand as the estimated world population. Since the number is continually growing, I will also be dropping sand (approximately 2.5 grains per second) into the container. To do this I am employing an 'upside down' Archimedes Screw which will be encased in a pendulum above the container.

The growing 'population' of sand will be displayed on the side of the container using some vintage Russian vacuum display tubes.

Collaborative Efforts

The Bride Wears Orange

I recently finished shooting a video created and directed by Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Arizona, Sama Alshaibi. At the time of this writing the video has no official title and is currently being called The Bride Wears Orange. The film deals with gender and ethic issues that Middle Easterners face in the United States and focuses on detainees at Guantanamo Bay. I acted as Cinematographer. The video was shot in HD video including the underwater clips.

Fire and Forget

I am currently working with artist Ken Shorr on his new video project entitled Fire and Forget. The video was originally fictional documentary style retelling of an incident involving Homeland Security, Senior Citizens and the US/Mexico border. It is a no budget film so I am filling the roles of videographer, sound tech, editor, animator and various other positions.

The project has recently undergone some changes and is taking shape as a completely different film at this point. I have scaled back my involvement as I am currently busy with my last semester. However, the last film I worked with Ken on, Depraved Indifference ended up getting some good reviews, including this one in the magazine Art in America.

Here are a few stills from the project:
